LED Lights in La Incubadora by Grimanesa Amorós

Grimanesa Amorós is a multimedia fine artist based in New York and Peru. For an installation at New York City’s Roger Smith Hotel Lab Gallery, she created a dim incubator-like environment filled with pregnant humanoid figures. The curves of the bulging wombs are outlined on the floor below with LED flexible strip lighting. The warm LED lights cast a soft glow that invokes both the comfort of an incubator and mankind’s abstraction of natural light.

Amorós says that “La Incubadora” required the performance of LED lights because they emit virtually no heat. Since the figures are made of wax and abaca pulp – two materials very sensitive to temperature change – any other lighting system would have adversely affected the integrity of this beautiful, haunting art installation.
